NCCC Team Removes Garlic Mustard

Team Leader Hannah Davis sprays garlic mustard. By: Michael Weisgarber Cedar 1 has been serving their second round in McGregor, Iowa, working at Effigy Mounds National Monument and Pikes Peak State Park. They’re spending four weeks removing invasive species. Their focus has mostly been on garlic mustard, which has been threatening the ecosystem since accidentally being introduced into the area in 1995.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Class 19 Member Spotlight: Meret Thali

By: Krista Eichhorst Name: Meret Thali Hometown: South Burlington, Vt. Meret is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Spruce 2 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to do something meaningful after finishing college and before heading to law school. Meret graduated from South Burlington High School in 2008 and the University of Vermont in 2012 with a bachelor of arts degree.

NCCC FEMA Corps Team Assists FEMA Region VII with Inventory Activities

Pine 5 member Scott helps verify inventoried items during an audit.   By Nick Humphries On March 27 FEMA Corps logistics team Pine 5 was redeployed to Kansas City, Mo. to continue working with FEMA at their Region VII warehouse and headquarters. The team was previously working in Kansas City with Region VII in October before being deployed to assist with Hurricane Sandy operations in New Jersey shortly after.

NCCC Team Working on the Mississippi

By Forrest Maher and Jessica Beck AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 4 is working with the US Army Corps of Engineers on the Mississippi River Project for their second project. The team is helping with upkeep and restoration of the campgrounds on the Mississippi River. Up to this point, Oak 4 has worked at the Grant River Recreation Area in Potosi, Wisconsin; Blanding Landing in Hanover, Illinois; Pleasant Creek in Bellevue, Iowa; and the Thomson Causeway in Thomson, Illinois.

ECC announces Spring Term Dean's List

  One hundred fifty-four students have been named to the Spring 2013 (January to May) Dean's List at Ellsworth Community College.  To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have taken 12 or more credit hours during the semester (a full-time class load) and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average while attending ECC classes in Iowa Falls or online.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: James Wilborn

  By: Rebecca Bigler James Wilborn, from Mountain Pine, Arkansas, is a member of Maple 4 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 4 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they will serve together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region.

Kirkwood Nursing Students All Pass National Board Exam

    Kirkwood Nursing students are prepared for a career in the real world, if you consider how well they perform on their national board exams. For the first time in the college’s history, each graduating Nursing student passed the national licensure exam on the first try, besting the national average of 89 percent pass rate for first-time test takers.

Teleia Stringfellow of Riverdale, Ill, is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 5 at the Vinton Campus. She learned about AmeriCorps NCCC from her cousin who served with the program and recommended it to her. She chose to participate in NCCC FEMA Corps because she is passionate about helping others and wanted to help people on a broader scale.
